30th-Dec-1997 07:50 pm - Vadim Fishkin. Lighthouse

"Fishkin's projects make us aware of the invisible connections between two points and the interconnectedness of the most diverse phenomena. In the Lighthouse installation (1997), Fishkin's heartbeat was transmitted to the cupola of the Viennese Secession from where it was re-transmitted as a pulsating light installed inside the gold-leaf filigree of the cupola placed on the rooftop of the Secession. In an interview I conducted with him in Ljubljana in March 2000, Fishkin compares the Lighthouse project with the On Kawaras "I am alive" project, which consisted of telegrams being sent to friends that only contained the phrase "I am still alive"9."

The artist, without meaning it became a political person after his action “Young blasphemer” at Moscow exhibition “Art Manege-98” where he cut to pieces cheap paper icons bought in a church shop. Later he was sued for a fabricated charge of “promotion of international and religious hatred”.<...>
Even the action “The school of young blasphemer” performed by Avdey Ter-Oganyan with his young students in 1998 was but a part of his project of “research” and appropriation of Modernism’s mechanisms. The destruction of values and audacity in this case served as specific technologies, which have to be mastered by young artists.

From Akexander Brener

Vuk Cosic: Рerformance/exhibition by Alexander Brener and Barbara Schultz in the Kapelica Gallery, Ljubljana, Slovenija. Something was suspicious when during the Mark Pauline lecture (about two weeks ago) the gallery curator Jurij Krpan told me that he is deeply shocked with Brener's tech list. He said Brener asked for few nails to hang some drawings and that's it. And really, Alexander have written a nice and calm manifesto on the gallery wall claiming at the end something like: Long live art, terrorism is the thing of the past.... After we all had a chance to read this, and after we saw several bad (xeroxed) drawings on the wall, a performance started. Barbara has put on a haloween mask and started burning those copies, badly overacting and altogether doing a lousy show for the present photographers and cameramen. After about five minutes of this, Alexander took a similar mask and with a can of spray paint broke the window of the gallery.... As soon as this was done he sat in a supermarket shopping cart and Barbara drove him around the crowded gallery for five minutes while he was screaming....

Aliona Martynova and Alena Vitukhnovskaya presented "drugs of future" at their exhibition "Process" at TV Gallery. As they say, you can get jabs, smell, lick and swallow them without any injury to your health. An epoch-making invention was illustrated by the photographs of a certain laboratory where the experiments had been made, by a guinea-pig in a 3 litre jar, and mainly by treatises and "scientific" diaries of Alena. Some of them she wrote in Butyrsky jail, where she stayed during a preliminary imprisonment on a charge of keeping and distributing of these very drugs.

Oleg Kulik. 1997 "I Bite America, America Bites me" (joint with Mila Bredikhina). New York

For two weeks, Kulik never left his cage or his canine character. He was taken nude in a minivan to the airport, and finally donned clothes before boarding a flight to Moscow.

Drawings from trial:
On Saturday morning January 4th 1997,Brener after supposedly travelling to Amsterdam for the express purpose of damaging the painting sprayed a green dollar sign on the work. The oil on canvas painting depicts a white cross on a light grey background and Brener said he intended the dollar sign to appear nailed to the cross.
